The German horsepower war between Audi and BMW has just got bigger. And you can be sure there are going to be some glum faces at AMG and BMW?s M division. Making its debut at next week?s Frankfurt show, the new RS6 Avant raises the bar in every possible way. As is traditional for hot Audis, the new model will debut as an estate although it would seem Audi is not ruling out a saloon version as well. Using a twin turbocharged version of the V10 engine seen in the S6 and S8, the RS6 produces an astounding 572bhp and 479 lb/ft of torque, the latter available all the way from 1,500-6,250rpm. With such a thick powerband the RS6 dismisses its two-tonne bulk and will nip at the heels of the R8 supercar. Audi claims a 4.6 seconds 0-62mph time and 14.9 seconds to 124mph, figures exactly matching those of the R8. Coincidence? We?ll see, but put the RS6 and an R8 together on a drag strip and our money would be on the RS6.
